Beauty and the Grotesque – Alvaro Tapia Hidalgo
A cast of villains, apparitions and film stars populate the mixed media work of Alvaro Tapia Hidalgo. These colourful characters belong to a world that knows pain, horror and dread. A world of vibrant colours and hand crafted textures.
Formally trained as a graphic designer Hidalgo skilfully dissects an image down to its elements, and then creates something awkward and disturbing yet beautiful and vibrant. The creations that fill his illustrations are born like Frankenstein’s monster, from gifted hands. The Chilean illustrator when once asked what he would have been if not an illustrator answered a butcher.
