Dana Tanamachi is an American graphic designer based in Brooklyn, New York. Dana is a full-time custom chalk letterer…yes, you read that right. Her work is obviously in very high demand – even Oprah commissioned her! Dana’s work is used for everything from magazines, to storefront displays, to wine labels.
I think what is truly engaging about Dana’s work is not only her prowess as a letterer, but the organic nature of her hand-drawn work. With the accuracy and perfection of form that computer-based design easily enables, it’s very refreshing to see organic, imperfect forms, especially in typography where perfection is king.
Dana’s lettering is so beautiful and refined that it’s almost hard to believe she does it all to scale, by hand, with chalk. Luckily for us, she’s put such doubts to rest by including a number of process videos.
